Peppermint's primary active compound is menthol — and menthol content varies considerably depending on origin, growing conditions, and harvest timing. Mentha × piperita grown in the Pacific Northwest of the United States consistently produces among the highest menthol concentrations available, which is why American-grown peppermint commands a premium over Indian or Chinese alternatives and why origin actually matters for this oil in a way that's directly measurable.
The adulteration picture for peppermint is slightly different from more exotic oils: synthetic menthol is cheap and abundant — it's a byproduct of other industrial processes — making it easy to boost the apparent potency of a weak or diluted oil without obvious detection. Corn mint oil (Mentha arvensis) is also frequently substituted or blended in, producing a harsher, less rounded menthol character. Both are detectable with proper testing.
Ours is sourced from Mentha × piperita grown in the USA and verified through PristiQuant™ — 40+ laboratory tests confirming menthol levels, species identity, synthetic marker screening, and purity. High menthol content, confirmed by batch.
Menthol works on the nervous system through TRPM8 receptors — the same receptors that detect actual cold — producing the cooling sensation without any temperature change. This is also why it's effective for tension headaches applied to the temples: the cooling effect triggers a competing sensory signal that reduces pain perception. For respiratory use, menthol acts as a mild decongestant and produces the sensation of easier breathing even when airflow hasn't changed significantly — useful, worth knowing the mechanism behind.
Use it diluted and applied to temples for headaches, to the chest for congestion, or to muscles post-exercise where the cooling effect provides genuine relief. Diffuse for focus — the research on peppermint and alertness is reasonable, primarily attributed to the stimulating effect of menthol inhalation on the sympathetic nervous system. Add a drop to a cold compress. Works well in blends where you want something sharp and immediately functional.
Botanical name: Mentha × piperita · Origin: USA · Extracted from: Leaves · Method: Steam distillation · Scent: Minty, cooling, clean
External use only. Dilute before skin application — peppermint is a strong sensitiser at high concentrations. Avoid eyes, mucous membranes, and sensitive areas. Not for children under 5, and keep away from the face of children under 10 — menthol can cause breathing difficulties in young children. Do not apply to broken skin. Not recommended during pregnancy — consult a healthcare professional before use. Store in a cool, dry place. Naturally occurring allergens: limonene, linalool. May produce an allergic reaction.
