Frankincense covers several distinct species that aren't interchangeable. Boswellia sacra from Oman — sometimes called Holy Oman frankincense — is the variety with the longest documented use in sacred and meditative contexts, high in alpha-pinene and incensole acetate. Boswellia carterii from Somalia is the most widely traded variety, with a similar profile. Boswellia frereana from Somalia is distinctively different — higher in monoterpenes, almost no boswellic acids, valued in perfumery for its dry, resinous character. Boswellia serrata from India — the species we use — has the most substantial research base of any frankincense species, primarily around its anti-inflammatory properties.
A clarification worth making about that research: most boswellia studies are conducted on oral extracts standardised for boswellic acids — large non-volatile molecules that don't fully survive steam distillation. The essential oil contains alpha-pinene, limonene, and incensole acetate rather than significant boswellic acid concentrations. The anti-inflammatory research on oral boswellia supplements doesn't transfer directly to topical or inhaled essential oil use. What the oil does have — documented in its own right — is alpha-pinene's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, incensole acetate's effect on the nervous system via inhalation, and reasonable evidence for skin cell regeneration support at appropriate dilutions.
The resin extraction challenge is similar to myrrh: steam distillation of a solid resin requires careful temperature control to avoid degrading the more volatile fractions. Solvent extraction is cheaper and faster but leaves residues. Dilution with cheaper *Boswellia* species or synthetic alpha-pinene are the primary adulteration routes — both detectable with species-specific testing.
Ours is steam distilled from Boswellia serrata resin sourced from India and verified through PristiQuant™ — 40+ laboratory tests confirming species identity, alpha-pinene and incensole acetate levels, solvent screening, and purity. Species verification is the critical test given how frequently frankincense species are blended or substituted.
The scent is warm, woody, and balsamic with a slightly citrus top note from the limonene fraction — more complex than most resin oils and notably different from the sharper, more medicinal character of myrrh. Use it in a diffuser for the incensole acetate nervous system effect — the research here is reasonable and specific. Apply diluted in skin formulations targeting inflammation or mature skin where the alpha-pinene activity is relevant. Works well blended with sandalwood, vetiver, or myrrh as a resin base, or with citrus top notes where you want the warmth grounded by something brighter.
