Myrrh is a wound resin. Commiphora myrrha trees produce it in response to physical damage — cuts made in the bark cause the tree to bleed a yellowish sap that hardens on contact with air into the resinous material that's been harvested for thousands of years. The compounds responsible for myrrh's documented antimicrobial and tissue-repair properties — curzerene, furanoeudesma-1,3-diene, and related sesquiterpenes — are the same compounds the tree produces for its own healing. The historical use of myrrh in wound care, embalming, and oral medicine wasn't arbitrary. It reflects genuine biological activity that modern analysis has since confirmed.
The extraction challenge is specific to resin oils: steam distillation of a solid, viscous material requires careful temperature and pressure control to avoid degradation of the more volatile sesquiterpene fractions. Solvent extraction is faster and cheaper but leaves residues that compromise both purity and scent character. Much of what's commercially available is either solvent-extracted without disclosure, blended with cheaper resin oils, or diluted with carrier oils to reduce the natural viscosity that makes genuine myrrh difficult to handle.
Ours is steam distilled from Commiphora myrrha resin sourced from Somalia — the primary origin for high-quality myrrh — and verified through PristiQuant™ — 40+ laboratory tests confirming sesquiterpene profile, species identity, solvent screening, and purity. The viscosity of genuine myrrh is part of what we test for rather than something we engineer around.
The documented activity is meaningful: curzerene and furanoeudesma-1,3-diene have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties at the skin level, with particular research interest in wound healing and oral health applications. The scent is rich, warm, and balsamic with a slightly medicinal depth — it functions as a base note in perfumery and a grounding anchor in diffuser blends, with considerably more complexity than most resin oils.
Use it diluted in skin formulations targeting inflammation, dryness, or mature skin. Add to diffuser blends where you want something resinous and genuinely complex. Works well in oral care formulations — myrrh has a long and well-documented history in this application specifically. Note that the natural viscosity means it benefits from gentle warming before use in blends.
Botanical name: Commiphora myrrha · Origin: Somalia · Extracted from: Resin · Method: Steam distillation · Scent: Rich, warm, balsamic — complex base note
External use only. Dilute before skin application. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Not for children under 5. Not recommended during pregnancy — myrrh has uterotonic properties and is contraindicated throughout pregnancy. Consult a healthcare professional before use. Store in a cool, dry place. Natural viscosity may increase in cold conditions — gentle warming restores normal consistency. Naturally occurring allergens: see batch report. May produce an allergic reaction.
